The occasion is observed across the country to pay tribute to the brave freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence.

India will be celebrating its 80th Independence Day on 15 August 2026. But confusion has arisen many times regarding the number of Independence Days. This confusion arises because we use two different methods for counting. India got inedependence on 15 August 1947. The number of years since our independence can be calculated by:
2026 – 1947 = 79 years
But the calculation for the celebration count is done by adding one more to the difference:
2026 – 1947 + 1 = 80
Therefore, we can say that India has been independent for 79 years, but we will be celebrating our 80th this year.
