Kolkata Disaster: Rescue Teams Rush To Save People Trapped Under Debris

Kolkata: The roof of an under-construction warehouse on Transport Depot Road near Brace Bridge in the Taratala police station area of West Kolkata suddenly collapsed around 12 pm on Wednesday, leaving several workers feared trapped under the debris. Kolkata Police officials, Disaster Management Group (DMG), Civil Defence and Fire Department teams immediately rushed to the scene and began rescue and relief operations.

Where did the incident happen?

The under-construction warehouse in Taratala collapsed suddenly on Wednesday afternoon. According to administrative officials present at the scene, construction work was underway on a warehouse on Transport Depot Road near Brace Bridge in the Taratala area. 

On Wednesday afternoon, while workers were working as usual, a large portion of the roof suddenly collapsed. The sheer weight of the debris caused widespread screams.

“Some people were working at the site at the time of the incident. We fear that many people may be trapped under the debris,” official said.

What did the police say?

A Kolkata police official stated that four people have been rescued so far. Police stated that teams from the Kolkata Police, Disaster Management Group, Civil Defence, and Fire and Emergency Services are continuously engaged in rescue operations at the scene.

Indian Army personnel are also assisting in the relief efforts. Heavy cranes and other machinery are being used to remove fallen iron beams and debris, while cranes and heavy lifting machinery were deployed to remove fallen iron beams.

Following this devastating accident, the state government is on full alert. The Disaster Management Group has set up special control room numbers at the State Secretariat to monitor relief operations and assist victims.
