New Delhi: The government oil marketing companies (OMCs) are preparing to increase the availability of 10 kg lightweight composite LPG cylinders for small businessmen and consumers with low gas consumption. After the proposal is approved, this cylinder can be sold at commercial rates through gas agencies and retail outlets. The aim of this initiative is to provide an easy and portable gas solution to consumers who do not require a 19 kg commercial cylinder.
Who will get the most benefit?
The biggest benefits of the new scheme are expected to be given to street vendors, tea-snack shops, small restaurants, cafes, food kiosks, people living in rented houses, students and migrant labourers. For such consumers, a 19 kg cylinder often proves to be heavy and has more capacity than required. The 10 kg option is considered more convenient for them.
What is the speciality of composite cylinder?
Composite LPG cylinders are much lighter than conventional steel cylinders. These do not rust and their outer part is partially transparent, due to which the level of gas remaining inside can be seen. It is also easy to lift them and carry them from one place to another. This is the reason why their demand is continuously increasing.
Are these cylinders already available?
The 10 kg composite cylinder is not entirely new. Some oil companies including Indian Oil are already making them available in the domestic category in select areas. Now the proposal is to expand their scope to reach small business consumers also. If approved, these will be made available at commercial LPG rates.
Will the new option replace the 19 kg cylinder?
This is not the case at present. The 19 kg commercial cylinder will be available as before for hotels, big restaurants and establishments with high gas consumption. The 10 kg composite cylinder will be an additional option for customers who require small quantities of LPG and want the convenience of a lightweight cylinder.
When will the new system start?
This proposal is under consideration among the oil companies and will be implemented on a large scale only after getting the necessary approvals. At present, no official date of its launch or nationwide sale has been announced. Once approved, its sale can be started through gas agencies and authorised retail outlets.
