Ujjain: Several devotees sustained injuries in a stampede-like incident at the Mahakaleshwar Nagchandreshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh on Monday, which is the third Monday of Sawan. The incident happened when a large crowd gathered at the temple to offer prayers in the holy monthn.
Where did the stampede happen?
The stampede-like situation incident happened after a huge crowd gathered at the temple to offer prayers this morning in the holy month of Shravan.
According to the preliminary reports, the incident happened near the Harsiddhi Temple Square where devotees had gathered in large numbers for darshan on the third Monday of Shravan, which falls on Nag Panchami this year.
This incident occurred as lakhs of devotees had gathered at the temple town for Nag Panchami and the third Monday of the holy month of Shravan.
The Nagchandreshwar Temple which is located atop the Mahakaleshwar Temple opens up for devotees for 24 hours only on one day every year during Nag Panchami.
Why did the stampede occur?
The stampede occurred as rumours were spread that electric current had seeped into barricades near a distribution point in the area. With devotees rushing to move away, the pressure of the crowd rose and barricades broke down causing people to fall and get injured.
A few devotees reportedly fell sick or faint amid the crowd rush. Security personnel and people who accompanied the devotees managed to pull them out of the crowded area.
The injured were rushed to Charak Hospital. The Collector and Superintendent of Police visited the place and took charge of the situation, after which the situation was brought under control.
What did the officials say?
Authorities say there were many who were injured after pushed and crushed by the crowd. They have been shifted to the district hospital where they are getting medical help.
