PM Modi Makes History: Surpasses Nehru as India’s Longest-Serving Elected PM

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday became India’s longest-serving Prime Minister, marking 12 years at the helm of the Central government and surpassed the record of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru of 4,399 days in office as an elected Prime Minister.

What is the record?

PM Modi first assumed office in May 2014 and then secured a third consecutive term in 2024, which led the country through a period of sweeping economic and social change.

The era era has also been marked by a series of high-profile infrastructure and nation-building projects, including the new Parliament building, Central Vista redevelopment, Kartavya Path, Vande Bharat trains, the Statue of Unity, INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail link, Noida International Airport, Namo Bharat RRTS and the Ganga Expressway.

Will NDA hold a meeting?

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will hold a crucial meeting in the national capital on Wednesday to celebrate the completion of 12 years of the government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Modi, along with senior BJP leaders and all NDA allies, are expected to attend this meeting. According to sources, a resolution praising Prime Minister Modi’s achievement is likely to be passed at this NDA meeting.

This is the first time such a major NDA meeting will be held after nearly a year and a half. The last NDA meeting was held in February 2025.

The NDA meeting to be held at Bharat Mandapam will be attended by the Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers of all 22 NDA-ruled states and Union Territories, besides leaders of all the alliance partners.

How did PM Modi break Nehru’s record?

PM Modi took office as Prime Minister with a landslide victory on May 26, 2014. He was re-elected with an even larger mandate in 2019 and began his second term on May 30 of that year. His third consecutive term began on June 9, 2024.

On June 10, PM Modi broke Nehru’s record of 4,399 days as Prime Minister, elected after the 1952 general elections. Nehru’s tenure from 1947 to 1952 was as head of an interim government, as elections were not held until 1952.

Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served 14 years, longer than PM Modi’s, but her prime ministerial tenure was not continuous. By surpassing Nehru’s record of 4,399 days, PM Modi has become India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister
