Pune Police Turn To Polygraph Tests For Ketan Agarwal Death Mystery

Pune: Pune police has approached the court on Thursday seeking permission to conduct a lie-detector (polygraph) test on Siya Goyal, who is the prime accused in the murder of her fiance Ketan Agarwal. Investigators told the court that, apart from the accused’s statements, there is no direct eyewitness or conclusive evidence establishing who allegedly pushed Ketan Agarwal into the gorge.

What did the police say?

To get to the bottom of the case, the police on Thursday sought permission from the court to conduct a lie-detector test on Siya Goyal. The investigation team told the court that, apart from the accused’s statements, there is no direct eyewitness or concrete evidence to prove who pushed Ketan into the ditch.

Why is a polygraph test mandatory?

In its petition, the Pune Police informed the court that the statements of Siya Goyal and co-accused Chetan Chaudhary have been recorded, but a polygraph test is necessary to proceed with the investigation. They argued that this test could provide new clues to the investigation and sought court approval for this.

Why are polygraph tests conducted?

Polygraph tests are often conducted in cases where preliminary or corroborative evidence is lacking. However, their results are not admissible as conclusive evidence in court. They are often used to provide new information to agencies during investigations and help uncover clues.

What did Chetan Bhagat say about the case?

Author Chetan Bhagat while commenting on the case said that it is more complex and pointed out the regressive ideology of the country’s business families.

“The easiest thing for Siya actually was to go to family court with her boyfriend, get married, take a certificate, and send it to the parents. End of story,” Bhagat said. “But she didn’t do that. She told the police that she didn’t cancel the wedding because it would have brought shame to the family,” he further said.

“And that is something that is there in business families… they tend to be highly regressive,” Bhagat said.
