New Delhi: While some families had tears in their eyes longing for a child, others had been waiting for years to hear the laughter of a little one. The coming together of hope and medical science wrote a memorable chapter at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday. The hospital’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology achieved a significant milestone with the birth of its 100th baby conceived through IVF.

October 3, 2026, was particularly special for the hospital as the date also marks the birth of India’s first IVF baby, Kanupriya Agarwal, popularly known as ‘Durga’, who was born in Kolkata in 1978. Remembering the historic contribution of Dr Subhash Mukhopadhyay, who laid the foundation for IVF in India, Safdarjung Hospital also celebrated its 100th successful IVF birth on the same day.

Not Just a Number, But the Story of 100 Families’ Happiness

The achievement of Safdarjung Hospital’s IVF centre is not merely a number, but a story of hope, trust, struggle and happiness for families who sought medical assistance to fulfil their dream of becoming parents.

At a special event organised at the hospital, children born through IVF arrived with their parents, creating an emotional atmosphere. The same children who were once seen as a small ray of hope during the IVF treatment process were now standing healthy and smiling before the doctors and healthcare workers. Seeing them filled the medical team with immense happiness. The presence of the families made the historic milestone even more special.

Services Ranging From IUI to IVF and ICSI

The IVF centre at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital provides couples with modern and comprehensive assisted reproductive services. These include Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

The centre has become a ray of hope for couples who face difficulties in becoming parents naturally due to various reasons.

Director Dr Kavita Sharma Congratulates the Team

On the historic occasion, Dr Kavita Sharma, Director of VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, expressed her happiness and said that seeing children born through IVF return to the hospital with their families brings immense satisfaction and joy.

She expressed gratitude to all the families who placed their trust in the hospital and appreciated the dedication, hard work and commitment of the IVF team towards patient care. She said the achievement belongs not only to the hospital but also to all the families who embarked on this journey with faith and hope.

Medical Superintendent Dr Charu Bamba Encourages the Team

Medical Superintendent Dr Charu Bamba congratulated and extended her best wishes to all the families who became parents through IVF. She praised the entire IVF team for the achievement and said that providing specialised assisted reproductive services in an increasingly improved manner remains one of the hospital’s priorities.

Contribution of Dr Jyotsna Suri Also Remembered

During the programme, the contribution of Dr Jyotsna Suri, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, was also specially acknowledged. Her role in the continued functioning of the IVF programme was appreciated.

Acting Head of the Department Dr Sarita Shamsundar welcomed the guests and conducted the proceedings of the programme.

Dr Bindu Bajaj Led the Programme

The historic event was led and coordinated by Dr Bindu Bajaj, In-charge of IVF and former Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Dr Bajaj, who has been closely associated with the operation and development of the IVF centre for a long time, played an important role in planning and coordinating the programme organised to mark the 100th successful IVF birth.

Dr Pankaj Talwar, Dr Sudha Prasad and Dr Banshree Das, among other distinguished guests, attended the event.

From Doctors to Nurses, Everyone’s Efforts Made It Possible

The success was not the result of the efforts of a single doctor or department, but of the collective hard work of the entire healthcare team. Dr Garima, Dr Divya and Dr Rita, along with the IVF team, and Sister Letha and her team made significant contributions to the success of the programme.

Throughout the IVF journey, doctors, nurses, embryologists, technicians and other healthcare workers played a crucial role. Reaching the milestone of 100 successful births is the result of this collective dedication and sustained effort.

When the ‘Children of Hope’ Returned to the Hospital

The most emotional moment of the programme came when children born through IVF returned to the hospital with their families. Families for whom the dream of having a child had once remained unfulfilled were now surrounded by children playing in their arms, filling the entire atmosphere with happiness.

The smiles of these children seemed to convey a message that when hope remains strong and is supported by medical science, even the most difficult dreams can become reality.

The birth of the 100th IVF baby at Safdarjung Hospital has added a new chapter to the hospital’s medical journey. The milestone also sends a message of hope to families seeking medical assistance to fulfil their dream of becoming parents.

With the 100th cry of a newborn, Safdarjung Hospital has not merely completed a numerical milestone but has recorded in its history the stories of happiness, hope and new beginnings of 100 families.
