Japanese carmaker Suzuki Motors will invest Rs 70,000 crore in India within the next five to six years, company Director and President Toshihiro Suzuki announced on Tuesday. The statement came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Suzuki’s first global Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the e-VITARA, at the company’s Hansalpur facility in Ahmedabad. In his address, Toshihiro Suzuki said, “Suzuki will invest more than Rs 70,000 crore in India over the coming years. For over forty years, Suzuki has been part of India’s mobility journey. We will keep working toward India’s goal of clean and sustainable transport and contribute to Viksit Bharat.”

e-VITARA: India as a Global Hub

Suzuki explained that the e-VITARA will be produced at this plant and made the main global hub for this model. The Made-in-India electric SUV will be exported to over 100 nations, including Japan and countries in Europe. He also mentioned another achievement—the launch of production of India’s first lithium-ion battery and cell with electrode-level localisation, which will be used in hybrid vehicles.

Focus on Research and Green Technology

The company aims to step up research and development (R&D) in areas like electric vehicles, battery making, and biogas, through its R&D centre in India. Suzuki R&D Centre India Private Limited, a fully owned arm of Suzuki, will take charge of developing advanced technologies and investing in future-focused projects such as BEV batteries and biogas.

Expanding Production Capacity

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has already revealed plans to set up new plants with a total capacity of one million units, along with its existing plants and the upcoming facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana, which is expected to begin operations in 2025. By 2030, MSIL plans to reach a total production of around four million units, with large-scale investments supporting this target.

India’s Role in Green Mobility

With the launch of Made-in-India BEVs for export to over 100 countries, India is set to become Suzuki’s global hub for electric vehicle manufacturing. Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated two major milestones at Suzuki’s plant, which highlight India’s growing position as a centre for green mobility while promoting the goals of Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
