Syria's tilt toward Israel after a meeting of 60 Muslim countries, signals a rift in the Arab coalition

60 Islamic countries meeting in Qatar: Recently, a meeting of 60 Muslim countries was held in Qatar to protest the Israeli attacks, in which Israel was strongly condemned and the concept of an Islamic NATO-like military organization was also put forward. But now, just a few days after this incident, the situation seems to be changing. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has confirmed that his country is negotiating a security agreement with Israel, which could be finalized soon. This indication comes at a time when there has been an atmosphere of tension and hostility between the two countries for decades.

What did Ahmed Al-Shara say?

Speaking to the media in Damascus, Sharaa stated that a security agreement is crucial for Syria. He stated that the agreement aims to protect Syrian airspace and the country’s integrity and sovereignty. Israel recently carried out airstrikes on Syria and deployed troops to the southern region. It is believed that if this agreement is reached, Israel could withdraw its troops from Syrian territory. Sources say that these talks evolved following a secret meeting in London, in which the US acted as mediator. Furthermore, the Trump administration is also reported to have paved the way for these talks by abruptly lifting several sanctions imposed on Syria a few months ago.

According to reports, Syrian Foreign Minister Asad al-Shaibani has submitted a detailed presentation to Israeli representatives, while Israel has also presented its terms. Reuters says the US wants this agreement reached before the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for late September. This is because several countries, including Britain, France, and Australia, are expected to introduce a resolution recognizing Palestine against Israel at that session. Therefore, the US wants to strengthen Israel’s position by gaining the support of a Muslim country like Syria.

Shara will travel to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly

Although President Sharaa denied US pressure, diplomatic circles believe that both pressure and support are present. Sharaa himself will travel to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly. He stated that a ceasefire-like situation has existed with Israel since his government came to power, despite Israel’s nearly 1,000 attacks on Syria as of December 8th. Analysts believe that the deep hostility that existed during Bashar al-Assad’s government is being transformed under Sharaa’s leadership due to US support and political interests.
