New Delhi: A political controversy has erupted in the national capital over the proposed Ramleela March and rally, with the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) objecting to Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s appeal asking rally participants travelling to Delhi to shop at local markets.

CAIT National Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said Delhi’s traders need customers visiting markets during the festive season rather than crowds gathering for political rallies. He argued that commercial activity depends on regular customer footfall and uninterrupted access to markets, not symbolic purchases made by a few visitors.

Khandelwal Questions the Appeal to Rally Participants

Taking a strong position, Khandelwal said the livelihood of traders should not become part of political experiments. He questioned the logic of creating circumstances that could disrupt access to markets and then asking rally participants to make purchases from local shops.

According to him, businesses depend on consistent customer movement, smooth transportation, uninterrupted supply of goods and adequate parking facilities. Occasional or symbolic shopping cannot compensate for disruptions affecting everyday commercial activity.

Festive Season Holds Major Importance for Delhi Markets

Khandelwal pointed out that millions of customers from across the country visit Delhi’s markets during Diwali, Chhath and Bhai Dooj. This period represents one of the most important business seasons for traders.

He warned that traffic congestion and road restrictions linked to the rally could affect small shopkeepers, street vendors, employees and people associated with the transport sector. Such disruptions could directly impact the earnings and livelihoods of thousands of families dependent on the city’s commercial activity.

CAIT Suggests Holding Rally Away From Busy Markets

While supporting the democratic right to peaceful protest, CAIT has suggested selecting a suitable venue on the outskirts of Delhi for the rally. The organisation believes this would allow political activities to continue without disrupting markets or inconveniencing the general public.

Emphasising the concerns of the trading community, Khandelwal said businesses need accessible markets and a secure working environment rather than political speeches and assurances. He maintained that political activities should not come at the cost of the livelihoods of millions of people.
