Upset over the alleged lack of action taken by the police after visiting the police for several days to lodge a rape complaint, a woman set herself on fire outside Baltan outpost in Zirakpur on Tuesday. The seriously burnt woman was first taken to the government hospital located in Sector-32, from where when her condition deteriorated, she was referred to PGI Chandigarh. According to doctors, she has suffered 70 percent burns and her condition remains critical.
Is the whole matter related to not registering FIR?
Family members say that the woman had been visiting the police post for many days complaining of rape, but the FIR was not being registered. It is alleged that even on Tuesday, when she reached the post with her brother, instead of listening to her, she was scolded and thrown out.

According to the family, shortly after leaving the post, the woman allegedly poured petrol and set herself on fire. The people present on the spot immediately tried to save him and took him to the hospital. After the incident, there was an atmosphere of chaos in the area.

Police say that FIR has now been registered on the complaint of the woman. Also, the investigation of the case has been handed over to a SP level officer. Officials say that a detailed investigation will be conducted into the suicide attempt and the entire incident.

Considering the seriousness of the matter, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal has ordered an investigation. He has clarified that if negligence of police personnel comes to light, strict action will be taken. Also, the Civil Surgeon has been instructed to monitor the treatment of the victim.
