Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Assembly’s second day of the monsoon session witnessed a heated political spat between the ruling and the opposition. The proceedings of the House proceeded with the Yogi Adityanath government preparing to present the supplementary budget for the financial year 2026-27, even as the opposition raised sharp questions over the government’s financial priorities, the Ram temple offering controversy, and issues of public interest.
The government described the supplementary budget as giving impetus to development plans, while the Samajwadi Party termed it “budget theft” and accused the government of failing to spend. The main objective of the supplementary budget is said to be to provide additional funds for ongoing projects and to complete necessary works related to public interest.
Will development plans get new momentum?
Before presenting the supplementary budget in the Assembly, Finance Minister Suresh Khanna said that this budget will give further impetus to the development journey of the state. According to him, additional financial provisions have been made to complete the schemes on which work is going on on time. Also, where new needs have emerged, there will be no shortage of resources. The government says that the purpose of the supplementary budget is not just to increase funds but to maintain the pace of development works.
Did the opposition question the government’s intentions on the budget?
Samajwadi Party rejected the claims of the government and raised serious questions regarding the budget. Senior SP leader Shivpal Singh Yadav alleged that every time the government brings a supplementary budget, it is unable to spend a large part of the sanctioned amount. Taking a dig at the government, he said that it is a “donation thief, offering thief and budget thief” government. The opposition alleges that the additional budget remains just an announcement and its expected impact is not visible at the ground level.
Has the political atmosphere been heated since the beginning of the session?
Even on the first day of the monsoon session, the opposition had demonstrated strongly against the government outside the House. Samajwadi Party and Congress MLAs protested on the issue of the Ram temple offering controversy and alleged irregularities in various recruitment examinations. He said that the government is avoiding accountability and keeping a distance from discussion on important issues. The opposition has indicated that it will strongly raise these issues in the upcoming meetings also.

Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana expressed his views on the importance of Vande Mataram before the commencement of the House proceedings. He said that this song is a symbol of India’s culture, pride and national identity and all public representatives should understand its basic meaning and purpose. His statement was appreciated by the ruling party, while the opposition said that the main focus should be on issues related to public concerns.

On the first day of the monsoon session, a condolence motion was tabled in the House on the demise of Samajwadi Party’s senior and oldest MLA Alambadi. Members of all parties paid tribute to him. After this, the assembly proceedings were adjourned till 11 am on Tuesday. On the second day, political activities intensified due to the supplementary budget for the government and the opportunity for the opposition to corner the government.
