The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has achieved a historic landmark by crossing Rs. 15 lakh crore in total Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) since its launch in 2016. This marks a major step in strengthening India’s public procurement system. The Ministry of Commerce & Industry shared the achievement in an official press release. The online marketplace was created to make government procurement more open, efficient and fair. In the past nine years, it has grown into one of the fastest-developing platforms, building strong connections between government buyers and a wide base of sellers.

A platform of trust and inclusivity

Speaking on the occasion, GeM CEO Mihir Kumar said that crossing the Rs. 15 lakh crore milestone shows the trust and support of both sellers and buyers. He added that this success belongs to the lakhs of stakeholders who have changed the way government procurement works in India. Kumar also said that GeM will continue to focus on inclusivity, process simplification and innovation so that opportunities reach every part of the country. According to him, the vision is to create a transparent, accountable and digitally strong procurement system in line with the goal of Viksit Bharat.

Driving transparency and entrepreneurship

Every deal on the platform is designed to do more than just a purchase. It ensures efficiency, responsibility and fairness, while technology and policies reduce barriers for sellers. This has made government spending more transparent and opened doors for entrepreneurship at the grassroots level. The platform has also helped small businesses and startups grow by giving them fair access to government contracts. By supporting digital adoption, GeM continues to play an important role in the Digital India mission.

Strengthening India’s governance model

The Ministry highlighted that this milestone proves GeM’s importance as a tool to build a digital and transparent economy. Earlier this month, the platform celebrated its 9th Foundation Day, marking almost a decade of reforms in public procurement. Over these nine years, GeM has become a trusted name in governance, delivering on the Prime Minister’s idea of “Minimum Government, Maximum Governance.” Today, it empowers sellers and service providers across India, including women entrepreneurs, startups, micro and small businesses, artisans, self-help groups and persons with disabilities.
