India Slams UN Comments on CJP Protests, Urges Equal Focus on Demonstrations Worldwide

New Delhi: There has been a war of words between India and the United Nations regarding the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protests in Delhi and the arrest of protesters. India has expressed strong objection to the comments of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). India termed these comments as inappropriate and said that there should not be unnecessary interference in the internal affairs of the country.

What did India say on UN’s comment?

India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva said in a statement issued on social media platform X that the right to assemble peacefully is enshrined in the Indian Constitution. The country’s institutions, independent judiciary and independent media protect this right.

India described OHCHR’s comments as inappropriate and said that the United Nations should perform its responsibilities impartially and without any discrimination. India also said that the human rights office should pay equal attention to large demonstrations in other parts of the world.

Why was there controversy over CJP demonstration and arrests?

Many protesters and leaders of the organisation were detained during the CJP protests in Delhi. After this, the United Nations Human Rights Office expressed concern over reports of protesters, movement leaders, civil society members, lawyers and journalists being detained.

OHCHR spokesperson Thamin al-Khaithan appealed for respect for the right to peaceful assembly and to ensure that sanctions imposed on protesters are necessary and proportionate.

What did India say on the right to peaceful demonstration?

Citing its democratic structure, India said that citizens have the right to assemble peacefully. However, reasonable restrictions may be imposed on this right to maintain public order.

According to the Indian Mission, the officials operate under the law and the country’s judicial system is available to resolve complaints. India described constitutional institutions and the judicial process as a means of redressal of citizens’ grievances.

What concerns did the UN express about the detention?

The United Nations Human Rights Office expressed concern over reports of mass detentions before and during the protests in Delhi. The office appealed to the Indian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release those arbitrarily detained.

OHCHR also called on authorities to initiate meaningful dialogue to address protesters’ concerns. On this issue, India made it clear that the country’s internal affairs and constitutional processes should be respected.
