New Delhi. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a major decision regarding the future of Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar. BCCI officials are set to inform the former fast bowler of this development during the 2026 IPL season. Agarkar’s current tenure is scheduled to conclude in June 2026. According to a report by The Indian Express, the BCCI has decided to extend Agarkar’s tenure. His term is likely to be extended until the next ODI World Cup, scheduled to take place the following year.
Information to be Conveyed Soon
Citing BCCI sources, the report states: “During Agarkar’s tenure, the team has performed exceptionally well and has navigated a transitional phase smoothly. He has been quite fearless in his decision-making. The Board feels that he should continue in his role. BCCI officials will update him regarding this during the ongoing IPL matches.”
Under Agarkar’s leadership as Chief Selector, India has secured three ICC trophies. During his tenure, India won the T20 World Cup in 2024, the Champions Trophy in 2025, and the T20 World Cup in 2026.
Agarkar’s Major Decisions
During his term, Agarkar made several significant decisions that will be remembered. It is widely believed that it was largely due to Agarkar and Coach Gambhir that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket. Both players were preparing for the ODI World Cup—a format in which they were deemed not to fit into the team’s future plans—and this information was duly conveyed to both of them. Under Rohit’s captaincy, India won the T20 World Cup in 2024. Following that victory, it was anticipated that Hardik Pandya would take over the captaincy; however, Agarkar handed the reins to Suryakumar Yadav instead. Furthermore, just prior to the 2026 T20 World Cup, the decision to drop Shubman Gill from the T20 squad and bring Ishan Kishan into the team was also executed under Agarkar’s chairmanship.
