New Delhi: After days of speculation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday confirmed that ex-party chief in Tamil Nadu, K Annamalai, has resigned and the party’s National President Nitin Nabin has accepted Annamalai’s resignation from the party’s primary membership.

Did Annamalai meet Amit Shah?

The development comes days after Annamalai, who is a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Nitin Nabin in Delhi on Tuesday.

According to reports, the BJP had asked Annamalai to reconsider his decision.

“The National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Nitin Nabin, has accepted the resignation submitted by the Tamil Nadu Ex. State President, Shri K. Annamalai, from the primary membership of the Party,” the BJP said in a release.

When did Annamalai join the BJP?

In 2020, Annamalai joined the BJP after quitting as an IPS officer. Annamalai, who is referred to as ‘Singham’ by his supporters, was made the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit chief in 2021, as he succeeded L Murugam, who was made a union minister.

Will Annamalai form a new party?

According to reports, Annamalai is planning to launch a new regional political party, which his associates are describing as ‘secular’ and ‘Tamil-first’ oriented.

According to sources, the proposed party could be launched within six to eight months and will try to establish itself as an alternative to both the BJP and the Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu.
