'Indus Waters Treaty Outdated': India Slams Pakistan At UN, Accuses Of Supporting Terrorism

New Delhi: In the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), India took a tough stand towards Pakistan and made it clear that there is no possibility of restoration of the Indus Waters Treaty. Anupama Singh, First Secretary of India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, accused Pakistan of patronizing terrorism and said Islamabad was using international forums for false propaganda. India also said that the country which has made terrorism a state policy is now facing its consequences.

Why was Pakistan called ‘Frankenstein State’?

Exercising the right of reply at the 62nd session of the UNHRC, Anupama Singh described Pakistan as a “Frankenstein state.” He said that Pakistan gave shelter to terrorists for decades, trained them and made them a part of its policies. Now the same terrorist networks are becoming a threat to him too. India alleged that Pakistan has been continuously promoting terrorism and tries to mislead the world.

What is India’s stand on the Indus Water Treaty?

India gave clear indications that its stand regarding the Indus Water Treaty has become stricter than before. In recent months, many senior leaders of the central government have said that the provision of water to Pakistan will not continue as before. India has already suspended the treaty and the message from within the government is that Pakistan should not expect a return to the old framework without taking action on terrorism.

Has Pakistan also raised this issue?

Pakistan is continuously raising the issue of Indus Water Treaty in international forums. Islamabad says suspending the treaty could affect its water security. Pakistani leaders have also recently expressed concern over Indian water projects and water management plans. However, India says that it is taking decisions as per its national interests and security needs.

How important is India’s message?

According to experts, this statement of India on a global platform like the United Nations is not just a diplomatic response but also a clear strategic message. India has been continuously reiterating that terrorism and normal bilateral relations cannot go together. The tough stance on the Indus Water Treaty and the sharp language regarding Pakistan are being considered as an indication that New Delhi is in no mood to soften its stance at the moment.
