Red Alert In Mumbai: Torrential Rain And High Tide Alerts Issued By IMD Spark Fresh Fears

Mumbai: This time the monsoon has completely stopped the pace of Mumbai. Continuous rains for the last 4 days have left the entire city in distress. Roads have turned into ponds, water has entered houses and shops in low-lying areas and daily life has completely derailed. There was no respite in the weather even on Saturday. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert of heavy to very heavy rain. The administration has also clearly said that one should leave the house only if necessary.

In which areas did the rain leave the most impact?

Highest rainfall was recorded in eastern and central parts of Mumbai. Areas like Vikhroli, Ram Mandir, Santa Cruz, Byculla, Sion, Vidyavihar and Colaba received record rainfall within a matter of hours. Roads were completely submerged in water at many places. Traffic had to be halted due to waterlogging in Andheri subway, while long queues of vehicles remained on many major routes. The cars parked in the parking lot were half submerged in water and people had to remain stuck in the traffic jam for hours.

Why did the Municipal Corporation face a big challenge?

Due to continuous rain, all the preparations of BMC seem to be failing. Drains overflowed and water remained stagnant for hours. The Municipal Corporation has started extra pumping stations. NDRF and fire brigade teams are deployed in sensitive areas. Waterlogged areas are being monitored through drones and boats. If necessary, people will be immediately shifted to a safe place.

Why did high tide increase concern?

The warning of high tide in the sea amid the rain has further increased the concern of the administration. Experts say that when heavy rains and high tide come together, the city’s drainage system is unable to function at normal speed. For this reason, low lying areas remain filled with water for a long time. The administration has advised to avoid going to beaches and waterlogged areas.

What advisory has been issued for the people?

BMC has appealed to the citizens not to pay attention to rumors and only follow the official information. In case of any emergency, you have been asked to contact helpline number 1916. Apart from this, Thane, Palghar and Panvel administrations have also activated their respective control rooms. People going to schools and offices have been advised to travel only after getting the latest weather information.

Is there hope for relief soon?

The Meteorological Department estimates that heavy rains may continue in many parts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigarh, Palghar and Konkan for the next two days. At some places, there may be heavy rainfall along with strong winds. Experts believe that if the same pace of rain continues, the problem of waterlogging in low-lying areas may increase further. In such a situation, the administration has appealed to the people to be cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
