The Congress high command on Thursday has decided to make party leader VD Satheesan as the new Chief Minister of Keralam. On Thursday, the Congress announced his name in a press conference in New Delhi.
Prior to the name announcement, a high-level meeting of top Congress leaders was held, which was attended by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, along with other senior party leaders.

Why did Congress express confidence in VD Satheesan?
The Congress-led United Democratic Front UDF secured a majority by winning 102 seats in the 140-member Kerala Assembly.
The announcement was after 10-day deadlock involving a fierce three-way contest among senior leaders VD Satheesan, Ramesh Chennithala and AICC General Secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal.
VD Satheesan has long been considered an active and influential figure in Kerala Congress politics. Until recently, he was the voice of the opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly and served as the Leader of the Opposition. He also has a strong hold within the organization. Therefore, the party leadership has now decided to appoint him as the Chief Minister of Kerala.
Who is VD Satheesan?
VD Satheesan has been a Member of Parliament (MLA) from Paravur, Kerala, since 2001. He succeeded Ramesh Chennithala as the Leader of the Opposition in Kerala in 2021. From 2021 to 2026, he established himself as a strong opposition leader by raising the voice of the opposition in the Assembly. He attacked the Left government on corruption charges. He also campaigned actively for the Congress party in the Assembly elections, leading the party to victory.
