Iran-US Standoff: Tehran Presents 7 Conditions As Tensions Escalate

Qatar: Diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing conflict between Iran and America seem to be intensifying once again. According to Mohsen Rezai, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Tehran has set 7 conditions for resuming talks with America. These conditions have been conveyed to the US administration through Qatar and now Iran is waiting for the response of US President Donald Trump.

What conditions has Iran set for talks?

Mohsen Rezaei said that the most prominent demands of Iran’s conditions include ending the war on all fronts, releasing Iran’s frozen funds and lifting the US naval blockade. Rezai also said in a social media post that Iran has put seven conditions before America to start talks and Tehran’s stance is clear.

Previous demands from Iranian officials have included the withdrawal of US troops from the region and compensation for the US-Israeli attacks on February 28. However, in the latest reports available, Rezai has not publicly disclosed the full list of the seven conditions.

How did Iran’s message reach America through Qatar?

According to Iran, Qatar is playing the role of mediator and has conveyed Tehran’s terms to Washington. Rezaei said Iran is in contact with Qatar and is now waiting for the US President’s response. Along with Qatar, Pakistan has also been involved in efforts to restart talks between the two sides.

This development has come at a time when the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed earlier between the two countries could not proceed further after its expiry last month. After this, efforts are on to resume talks.

Has Iran even warned America of war?

Rezai has said that if America does not accept Iran’s conditions, Tehran is also ready for a decisive war. He also said that American threats will not change Iran’s stance.

Rezai did not rule out the possibility of another US attack. According to him, Iran has changed its military plans and American naval assets are also being monitored. They also recently claimed to have tested a multiple-warhead anti-ship missile near a US ship or aircraft carrier, although this Iranian claim has not been independently verified.

Can the Iran-America war end soon?

According to Rezai, in practice the war is still going on, but Tehran is working on a strategy aimed at ending the conflict as soon as possible. On the other hand, Iran is also talking about preparations for a military conflict. That means, at present, both diplomacy and military preparations are going on parallelly.

What is the new update on Iran’s nuclear programme?

On the nuclear issue, Rezai said that Iran has not yet decided to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). However, he warned that if the pressure from America and Israel continues further, the situation may change. He also said that there has been no change in Iran’s current nuclear policy.

Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Rezai said that an agreement between Iran and Oman was almost ready, but it has not been made public yet. He indicated that this could be taken forward after getting regional support.
