New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) launched a massive cleanliness drive across all 12 zones of the national capital on Thursday, deploying thousands of sanitation workers and specialised machines to remove dust and garbage from roads, footpaths and public spaces.
The special campaign was conducted between noon and 2 pm, with water tankers, jetting machines and modern mechanical road-sweeping equipment deployed at multiple locations. The initiative aims to reduce road dust, improve public hygiene and strengthen cleanliness arrangements across Delhi.
MCD Commissioner Inspects Ring Road Operations
MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar personally supervised the campaign. He visited the Ring Road in Punjabi Bagh to inspect the ongoing cleaning operations and review arrangements for the sanitation workers deployed there.
In the West Zone, 241 sanitation workers were assigned to five major locations. These included 32 workers on Shiv Mandir Road in Baprola, 35 on 55-Foota Road, 39 on Main Najafgarh Road, 55 between Nanda Devi Chowk and DDA Bindapur, including the stretch between Pillars 576 and 639 on Najafgarh Road, and 80 on the Punjabi Bagh Ring Road.
Extensive Operations Across Southern and Central Delhi
The campaign covered all 23 wards of the South Zone, where around 300 additional sanitation workers, 20 tipper vehicles and 11 water tankers were deployed. Approximately 41 kilometres of roads were cleaned, removing seven metric tonnes of dust and two metric tonnes of garbage. The roads were also washed as part of the operation.
In the South-East Zone, cleaning activities covered Lajpat Nagar, Nehru Nagar, Mathura Road, Tughlakabad Extension and the Ring Road. The South-West Zone included Kakrola, Marble Market in Sector 20, IGI Aerocity, Mahipalpur and Vasant Kunj. In the Karol Bagh Zone, operations were carried out in Naraina Industrial Area, along the Ring Road and in Naraina village.
In Wazirpur, the Central-North Zone deployed 30 workers, two jetting machines and four auto-tippers. The North Zone assigned 34 workers, two jetting machines and two water-sprinkler machines to clean a six-kilometre road stretch.
Large-Scale Deployment in the North-East Zone
The North-East Zone witnessed one of the largest deployments, with 1,896 sanitation workers supported by three mechanical road-sweeping machines, four jetting-cum-sprinkler machines, 15 auto-tippers and 10 e-rickshaws.
Will the Six-Day Campaign Deliver Lasting Results?
The MCD’s cleanliness initiative is part of a six-day programme covering major markets, commercial centres, public transport locations, Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, institutional premises and residential areas.
Deputy Commissioners of all zones are personally monitoring the operations. The campaign is intended to improve cleanliness across the capital and tackle dust accumulation on major roads. Its long-term impact, however, will depend on whether the improved cleaning arrangements are maintained beyond the special drive.
