New Delhi: West District Police have uncovered an alleged cyber fraud operation being run through a fake insurance call centre in Janakpuri, where callers reportedly posed as representatives of leading insurance companies to cheat policyholders with promises of policy upgrades and additional benefits.
During a raid at the second-floor premises of A-3/11, Janakpuri, on November 4, police apprehended 43 people, including 32 women and 11 men. Five key accused, including the alleged owner of the operation, have been arrested. The remaining 38 individuals were reportedly working as telecallers at the centre.
West District DCP Hareswar V Swami shared details of the operation during a press briefing at Delhi Police Headquarters. Acting on a tip-off about a suspected insurance-related cyber fraud centre, a special team was formed under the leadership of ACP Operations Rajesh Kumar and the supervision of the DCP. The raid was conducted by a team led by Inspector Amit Dhani.
How Did the Call Centre Allegedly Target Policyholders?
According to investigators, employees contacted customers while posing as representatives of insurance companies, including PNB MetLife, SBI Insurance, ICICI Lombard and Bharti AXA. They allegedly offered policy upgrades, additional benefits and attractive schemes to persuade policyholders to share information or transfer money.
Police allege that the centre’s owner, Vishal Kapoor, arranged customers’ personal data. Telecallers contacted potential victims and passed their details to managerial staff, who allegedly coordinated with the owner to arrange payments through bank accounts.
What Did Police Recover During the Raid?
The search led to the recovery of Rs 2 lakh in cash, one HP laptop and 48 mobile phones, comprising 40 keypad phones and eight smartphones. Police also seized 38 SIM cards, 619 pages containing customer information, 67 registers and 38 company identity cards.
In addition, 22 debit, credit and payment cards were recovered. Investigators found that two bank accounts linked to the owner’s mobile phone were associated with five cybercrime complaints registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP).
The five arrested accused have been identified as Vishal Kapoor, the alleged owner; Nitin Sharma, an administrative employee; Gunjan, the HR manager; Ajay, an assistant manager; and Bhim, a manager.
An FIR numbered 450/2026 has been registered at Janakpuri Police Station under Sections 318(4), 61(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Senior police officials, including Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, Special Commissioner Neeraj Thakur and Joint Commissioner Suman Goyal, appreciated the team’s action.
Investigation Underway to Trace the Wider Network
Police are examining the seized documents and electronic devices to establish the source of the customer data, identify affected policyholders and trace the alleged flow of money. Further investigation is underway to uncover the full extent of the suspected operation.
