Guwahati: Assam’s final list published after the Special Revision (SR) show a significant drop in the number of registered voters compared to the draft roll released in December.
How many names are deleted?
The Election Commission had published the final voters’ list for poll-bound Assam on Tuesday with over 2.43 lakh names deleted from the draft rolls.
The final roll has a total of 2.49 crore voters, a decrease of 0.97 per cent from the draft roll.
What did Assam CM say?
During a press conference on Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that lakhs of “doubtful voters” were deleted during the Special Revision.
He also said that the exercise was just the beginning of a broader effort to tighten the voter rolls.
“This is only the beginning. Names of more such people will be deleted when the Special Intensive Revision will be conducted,” Sarma said a day after the Election Commission published the final voters’ list.
Sarma also said, “The war on illegal Bangladeshi Muslim (immigrants) will continue.”
What did the Assam CEO say?
While addressing a press conference at Janata Bhawan in Dispur on Wednesday, State Chief Election Officer Anurag Goel said that 12.97 lakh Form 7 applications were received, 1.9 lakh were rejected, 10.63 lakh were accepted, and another 43,536 are still pending for processing.
“In many places, where we found that many bulk applications had been filed, the Election Registration Officers had been authorised to verify whether these were legitimate applications. In many cases, applicants were not even aware that complaints had been registered against their EPIC numbers… The applications found invalid were summarily dismissed, and these are not counted as applications received,” said Goel.
Which areas saw the biggest changes?
Most of the Muslim-majority areas of Assam registered an increase in the number of voters in the final list compared to the draft list. But in several tribal-majority and hill districts, officials recorded notable drops in voter numbers.
According to the data, out of 35 districts in the state, 24 registered a dip in final voters’ figures against 11 recording an increase. The change in the figures ranged from a few hundred to over 30,000.
