‘Traitor’ Caught in Punjab for Allegedly Sending Army Movement Footage to Pakistan

Pathankot: Security agencies have busted a big espionage network in Pathankot, Punjab. Police have arrested a person who is accused of sending information about the activities of the Indian Army and paramilitary forces to handlers sitting in Pakistan. According to the investigating agencies, the accused had secretly installed CCTV cameras near National Highway-44, through which the movement of the army was being monitored. After this revelation, security arrangements have been further tightened in the border areas.

Were surveillance cameras installed on the highway?

Investigation has revealed that the accused had installed an internet-based CCTV camera near a shop on Pathankot-Jammu Highway. Police say that this camera was installed for the purpose of monitoring the activities of the army and paramilitary forces. It is alleged that the live footage from the camera was being sent to handlers based in Pakistan. Police have also recovered electronic devices from the spot.

Were instructions being received from Dubai also?

According to police sources, apart from Pakistan, the accused was also getting instructions from a person present in Dubai. Initial investigation has also revealed that money was given to the accused in exchange for spying. Some reports have claimed that he had received around Rs 40 thousand. At present the agencies are investigating who else is involved in the network and whether it is connected to any big international gang.

Are many more people under investigation?

Pathankot police said that only one arrest has been made in the case, but the names of four suspects have emerged during the investigation. Agencies are trying to find out whether this network was active for a long time. Security agencies are also investigating the mobile phone, bank accounts and social media activities of the accused. Police fear that this case may not be limited to just espionage and it may also be linked to other illegal activities.

Has Punjab already become the target of espionage network?

In the recent past, many cases of Pakistan-backed espionage and smuggling networks have come to light in Punjab. In recent months, security agencies have caught many such modules, whose links were said to be linked to Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI. In some cases, attempts to trap youth and gather information about military activities through social media have also been revealed.

After this matter came to light, security agencies in Pathankot and surrounding border areas have been put on alert.
