YouTube’s Big Policy Change: Views Will Count From First Frame, But What About Earnings?

New Delhi: YouTube is going to make a big change in the way it counts the views of videos on its platform. This new rule will be applicable worldwide from August 24, 2026. After this, as soon as a video is played, that is, from the first frame itself, it will be considered a view. There will no longer be any requirement of minimum watch time for this. This change will apply to all major video formats including long-form videos, Shorts and live streams. YouTube says its purpose is to unify the calculation of views across different formats and give creators a clearer way to understand the reach of their content.

Will every play of a video be considered a view from August 24?

Under the new rule, as soon as the playback of a video starts, one view will be added to the public view count. That is, even if the viewer stops the video immediately after starting it, he will still be included in the play public views. This may particularly impact view counts for long-form videos, as the process for recording views will be different between then and now.

How were views counted on YouTube earlier?

YouTube has long used different view-counting systems for different video formats. In the case of common long-form videos, it was long believed that the viewer was required to watch the video for some time, whereas for Shorts, the system of registering views as soon as playback started was in place since last year. Now the company is going to extend this model to other video formats also.

Can this suddenly increase the views of YouTubers?

It is likely that after the implementation of the new rules, publicly visible view counts on many channels will increase faster than before. The reason for this is that now it will not be necessary for the viewer to watch the video for a long time. However, more public views will not mean that viewers have watched the video for longer. Therefore, it may be harder than before to gauge a video’s actual popularity or audience engagement just by looking at views.

Will the new rule also increase the earnings of YouTubers?

Creators’ earnings will not automatically increase just because public views increase. YouTube has clarified that the metrics related to change in view count and earnings will remain different. Actual audience engagement, watch time and other qualifying metrics will continue to be important in evaluating ad revenue and the YouTube Partner Program. Therefore, getting more views does not mean more earnings.

Will the account of old views also be changed?

The new rule will be applicable to playback from August 24 onwards. Its main impact will be on the public view count recorded going forward. A separate ‘Engaged Views’ metric will be available in YouTube Analytics to understand actual audience engagement. This will allow creators to see how many viewers actually engaged with the content out of the total public views.

Is this why YouTube made this change?

According to the company, having different view-counting systems for different video formats led to confusion about metrics among creators. YouTube now wants a uniform public view metric across all formats. This approach is also closer to the arrangement of platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where views are recorded as soon as the video plays.

Should creators now focus only on views?

After the new change, it would not be right for creators to consider only public view count as the measure of success. How long the video was watched, how long the audience remained engaged and what kind of response was received to the content, these figures will be more important. In such a situation, while assessing the actual performance of the channel by looking at the increased views after August 24, it will be important to also keep an eye on the engagement metrics present in Analytics.

Will the YouTube experience change for viewers too?

There won’t be any major changes to the way YouTube plays for viewers. Videos will continue to be watched in the same manner, but the view count shown below a video may now increase as it begins. This will primarily impact data interpretation for creators, brands, and advertisers, as it will become more important than ever to understand the difference between public views and actual audience engagement.
