New Delhi. The Punjab Kings—a team that at one point appeared to be the strongest contender in IPL 2026—now find themselves in a precarious situation. On Thursday, they suffered a defeat at the hands of the Mumbai Indians, marking their fifth consecutive loss of the season. Following this defeat, Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer appears visibly shattered.
At one stage, Punjab was on the verge of securing a playoff berth; however, five consecutive defeats have dealt a severe blow to their prospects. With six wins and five losses in 12 matches, they currently stand at 13 points. They occupy the fourth spot on the points table and are facing stiff competition from other teams. To qualify for the playoffs, Punjab must win both of their remaining matches.
A Bitter Pill to Swallow
Speaking after the match, Iyer admitted that coming to terms with this defeat has been incredibly difficult for him. He stated, “This loss is very hard to digest. I don’t want to blame the circumstances. It was a fantastic game of cricket. Tilak Varma played a brilliant innings and utilized the field exceptionally well; full credit goes to him.”
He also heaped praise on Azmatullah Omarzai, crediting him with helping the team cross the 200-run mark. Iyer remarked, “At one point, we were looking at a total of around 170-180, but Omarzai completely turned things around. It was magnificent to see him propel the team past the 200-run mark.”
Ready for the Next Two Matches
The road to the playoffs is not yet closed for Punjab. The team must win both of its remaining matches to stand a chance of qualifying. Given the talent and capability within the squad, Iyer remains optimistic and excited about the upcoming fixtures. He affirmed, “We are certainly looking forward to the upcoming matches. We have an afternoon game coming up, and we absolutely need to win both matches. We are eagerly awaiting these two games.”
