New Delhi: Analysis of the affidavits of the candidates before the second phase of West Bengal Assembly elections has brought out many important things. According to the report of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), about a quarter of the candidates contesting in this phase have criminal cases registered against them. Along with this, a large number of candidates are also millionaires, who show a picture of both money and background in the election field.

How many candidates admitted to having a case against them?

According to the report, out of a total of 1,445 candidates, 338 have mentioned criminal cases in their affidavits. Of these, there are 295 candidates who face serious allegations. Statistics show that some candidates are facing serious cases like murder, while many are also facing charges of attempted murder.

What is the picture according to the parties?

If we talk about political parties, the highest percentage has come out among BJP candidates, where 102 out of 141 candidates have given information about criminal cases. Such cases have also been reported among TMC, CPI(M) and Congress candidates, although their percentage is different.

How many ‘Red Alert’ seats are there?

The report also states that out of 142 seats, 63 have been considered ‘red alert’. At least three such candidates are in the fray for these seats, against whom criminal cases are registered. This means that the options before voters in these areas become limited.

How many candidates are millionaires?

According to the data, out of the total candidates, there are 321 whose assets are more than Rs 1 crore. That means almost one out of every five candidates is a millionaire. The report also said that the average wealth of a candidate is around Rs 1.21 crore.

Which party has the richest candidate?

The highest number of millionaires is said to be among TMC candidates. After this come the candidates of BJP, then CPI(M) and Congress. This shows that money power is present in almost every big party.

What do these figures mean for voters?

Election analysts believe that such data helps voters understand the background of the candidates. Although the actual decision is taken on the day of voting, such revelations definitely affect the election atmosphere.
