Do Meta Al Smart Glasses Really Record? Privacy Facts You Should Know

New Delhi: The upcoming Meta AI smart glasses are already in the
news even before their launch. They are said to record everything the user sees and hears.

What are the upcoming Meta AI smart glasses?

If you’re thinking about buying Meta’s upcoming AI glasses, you may want to be a little cautious, because the device could pose a risk to your privacy. According to reports, Meta is working on next-generation AI-powered smart glasses that could continuously record what users see and hear throughout the day. However, this technology has raised concerns about privacy and transparency in recording.

According to a Financial Times report, the prototype is internally referred to as “Super Sensing.” It uses the glasses’ cameras and microphones to periodically record images and audio, allowing users to later ask Meta AI what they saw or heard during the day.

According to reports, these glasses will continuously record audio and also take photos every few seconds. Meta’s current glasses have an LED indicator that lights up when taking photos or videos, but reports suggest the company will not keep this LED on while using the new Super Sensing features.

How will the AI smart glasses work?

In one proposed system, Meta reportedly will not store the raw footage or audio, and users will not have access to them either. Instead, the company is considering extracting metadata from the images and audio before uploading them to its servers, where its Meta AI models can process the information and answer users’ questions. For example, a user could ask Meta AI where they left an item during the day or request information about a place they had previously visited. Meanwhile, the report says these Super Sensing features could also be activated on Meta’s existing lineup of glasses through a software update. It is also reported that the company is discussing whether the data collected from these new glasses could be used to train its own AI models.

What is the response of the company?

Meta said that it would not comment on “internal prototypes,” but said its approach is focused on being “privacy-conscious from the start.” The company also mentioned “Project Aria,” which uses “privacy-preserving technologies to help people without capturing photos and videos like traditional cameras.” It also includes features that automatically convert conversations into readable text. Meta’s CEO also mentioned the potential of such glasses during the company’s first-quarter earnings report this year.
