The Republican Party-controlled US Senate has passed a resolution trying to prevent the Trump administration from pursuing any possible military action against Iran. The motion passed by a close margin of 50-48.
Four Republican senators also supported the Democrats in this vote. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Rand Paul of Kentucky voted in favour of the resolution. Whereas Democrat Senator John Fetterman voted against it.
What was the reason behind passing the proposal?
Republican senators Dave McCormick and Mitch McConnell were absent during the vote. Political analysts believe that his absence played an important role in passing the resolution. Earlier, neither of the leaders had been in support of war-related proposals.
Will this proposal have any legal effect?
Although the proposal has been passed, a US administration official has said that it will not have any legal effect. According to the official, such proposals do not go to the president for signature and do not take the form of law.
The official also said that there is currently no active military conflict going on with Iran. According to him, hostilities have ended after the ceasefire on April 7, hence no question of removing the American forces arises.

Democratic leaders say Congress never approved a war against Iran. Democrat leader Greg Meeks, who introduced the resolution, said the President does not have the authority under the Constitution to continue any prolonged military campaign without the permission of Congress.
